VMM is a lay Christian non-government organisation (NGO), founded in 1969, whose members share their lives, faith, resources and skills to promote equality, respect and dignity for all. VMM is a membership-based organization based in three regions: England/Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Our founding ethos is based upon ecumenical Christian principles and we work with people and communities regardless of religion, politics or social status. We often use the abbreviation VMM for "The Volunteer Missionary Movement", and VM for "Volunteer Missionary". The word “missionary” has a lot of baggage attached to it. For VMM the concept of mission is about sharing, in a balanced way, our lives, faith, resources, skills and culture with the local people, and learning from them with mutual respect. It is about solidarity. For VMM sustainable development is synonymous with Christian practice. The transfer of skills from one person to another is a fundamental way of giving witness to Christ's words through our actions. |
